Lucia Swarts studierte bei Anner Bijlsma und Lidewij Scheifes am Königlichen Konservatorium in Den Haag, wo sie 1982 ihr Konzertdiplom erwarb. Im Jahr ihrer Abschlussprüfungen gab sie ihr Debütkonzert im Kleinen Saal des Amsterdamer Concertgebouw als Preisträgerin der Reihe „New Vintage” für talentierte junge Musiker.
Neben ihren Auftritten als Solistin widmet sie sich intensiv dem Spiel von Musik aus allen Epochen der Musikgeschichte in einer Vielzahl von Kammermusik-konstellationen, wobei sie Instrumente verwendet, die der jeweiligen Epoche entsprechen. Neben dem modernen Cello spielt sie auch Viola da spalla, Barockcello, Basse de violon und Cello piccolo.
Obwohl die Alte Musik einen besonderen Platz in ihrem Herzen einnimmt, beschränkt sie sich nicht auf das Spielen des historischen Cellos, sondern spielt auch romantisches und zeitgenössisches Repertoire.
Sie liebt Bach und ist überzeugt vom großen Einfluss seiner Musik auf spätere Komponisten wie Beethoven, Reger, Brahms, Mendelssohn und Gubaidulina.
Seit 1983 ist Lucia Solocellistin im Barockorchester der Niederländischen Bachgesellschaft und spielt außerdem im Residentie Bach Ensemble und im Tulipa Consort. Von 1983 bis 2017 trat Lucia mit dem Ensemble Asko|Schönberg auf. Sie wirkte an zahlreichen Aufnahmen mit diesen Ensembles und Dirigenten mit, darunter Reinbert de Leeuw, Oliver Knussen, Gustav Leonhard, Jos van Veldhoven und Sigiswald Kuijken.
Sie hat sechs Solo-CDs veröffentlicht: Sechs Cellosonaten von Vivaldi (CC 72051), Cellosonaten von Boccherini (CC 72065), Italienische Cellokonzerte (CC 72021), Bach After Bach Vol. 1 (mit Leo van Doeselaar) (CC 72066) und Italienische Konzerte & Sonaten (CC 72516)
Lucia Swarts ist seit 1988 Professorin für modernes und barockes Cello am Königlichen Konservatorium in Den Haag. Neben ihrer Lehrtätigkeit, die sie mit großer Leidenschaft ausübt, betreut sie auch talentierte junge Cellisten. Lucia Swarts ist außerdem Gastprofessorin am Conservatorio Superior de Salamanca (Spanien).

Lucia Swarts studied under Anner Bijlsma and Lidewij Scheifes at the Royal Conservatoire in The Hague, where she attained her Performing Musician diploma in 1982. In the year of her final exams, she gave her debut recital in the Kleine Zaal at the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, as a prizewinner in the ‘New Vintage’ series for talented young musicians.
Apart from her appearances as a soloist, she has devoted considerable time and effort to playing music from every period of musical history in a wide range of chamber music settings, using instruments appropriate to the period. As well as the modern cello, she also plays the viola da spalla, baroque cello, basse de violon and cello piccolo.
While early music has a special place in her affections, she does not confine herself to playing historical cello, but also performs romantic and contemporary repertoire.
She has a great love for Bach and is convinced of the major influence of Bach’s music on later composers including Beethoven, Reger, Brahms, Mendelssohn and Gubaidulina.
Since 1983, Lucia has been principal cellist in the baroque orchestra of the Netherlands Bach Society and she also plays in the Residentie Bach Ensemble and Tulipa Consort. Lucia performed with the Asko|Schönberg ensemble from 1983 until 2017. She has been involved in many recordings with these ensembles and conductors including Reinbert de Leeuw, Oliver Knussen, Gustav Leonhard, Jos van Veldhoven and Sigiswald Kuijken.

Lucia Swarts has been a professor in modern and baroque cello at the Royal Conservatoire since 1988. As well as teaching students – about which she is truly passionate – she also looks after talented young cellists. Lucia Swarts is also visiting professor at the Conservatorio Superior de Salamanca (Spain).
