Bettina Hoffmann ist Gambistin und Barockcellistin.
Nach ihrem Orchesterabschluß in Violoncello bei Daniel Grosgurin an der Mannheimer Musikhochschule studierte sie Gambe bei Wieland Kuijken. Heute lebt sie in Florenz.
Sowohl als Solistin als auch mit ihrem Ensemble Modo Antiquo hat sie Konzerte in ganz Europa gegeben und ist zu wichtigen internationalen Festivals eingeladen worden. Zusammen mit Federico Maria Sardelli, leitet sie das Ensemble Modo Antiquo, eine der führenden Gruppen Italiens auf dem Gebiet der historischen Aufführungspraxis, das in den Jahren 1997 und 2000 zwei nomination zu den Grammy Awards erhalten hat. Unter ihren über siebzig CD-Einspielungen finden sich besonders Suiten für Gambe und Generalbaß aus den Scherzi Musicali von Johann Schenck, eine Auswahl aus dem Werk von Marin Marais unter dem Thema der Ideés Grotesques, des Tratado de Glosas von Diego Ortiz, die Ersteinspielung der Ricercari Silvestro Ganassis und die Werke für Violoncello von Domenico Gabrielli.
Bettina Hoffmann ist ausserdem als Musikwissenschaftlerin tätig. Sie ist Autorin des «Katalog der solistischen und kammermusikalischen Gambenmusik» (LIM 2001, jetzt online für Violanet), und von «Die Viola da Gamba», eine umfassende Geschichte dieses Instrumentes, die auf italienisch, deutsch und englisch veröffentlicht ist. Ihr Buch über die tiefen Streichinstrumente in der Musik Antonio Vivaldis erschien 2023 auf italienisch und auf deutsch.
Bettina Hoffmann ist Dozentin für Gambe am Konservatorium in Bologna und für Gambe, Barockcello und barocke Kammermusik an der Scuola di Musica di Fiesole. 2011 rief sie dort den italienischen Gambentag ins Leben.
Bettina Hoffmann is German and lives in Florence where she pursues an active career both as a performer on the viol and baroque cello and as a musicologist. She graduated in cello at the Musikhochschule in Mannheim and then went on to study viola da gamba with Wieland Kuijken.
She has given concerts all over Europe and America, participating as a soloist and with her ensemble Modo Antiquo at major festivals and venues A significant discography (more than 70 CDs for Deutsche Grammophon, Naïve, Brilliant Classics, Tactus and others) is especially notable for Idées grotesques with works by Marin Marais, Scherzi Musicali for viola da gamba by Johann Schenck, the first complete recording of the works by Diego Ortiz and Silvestro Ganassi and the opera omnia for cello by Domenico Gabrielli. In 1997 and 2000 two CD of her ensemble Modo Antiquo nominated for Grammy Awards.
Bettina Hoffmann is the author of the Catalog of solo and chamber music for viola da gamba (LIM, 2001, now online for Violanet) and of La viola da gamba, a comprehensive history of the viol, published in Italian, German and English. Recently she published a volume on the low bow instruments in the work of Antonio Vivaldi (Olschki, 2020; Ortus 2023). In 2018 she discovered and edited the only German treatise on the viol currently known to us, Instruction oder eine anweisung auff der Violadigamba.
She is professor of viola da gamba, baroque cello, performing praxis and baroque chamber music at the Conservatorio «Giovanni Battista Martini» in Bologna and the Scuola di Musica di Fiesole.
